EVERYONE STARTS SOMEWHERE

The first track, the first mistake and the joy of figuring things out


There is a particular kind of excitement that comes with making electronic music for the first time. You open your DAW, load a synthesizer and start turning knobs without really knowing what they do. You press a few keys, change a waveform, move a filter and suddenly the sound coming out of your speakers is completely different from what you expected. You probably don't understand why it happened, and you may not be able to recreate it tomorrow, but for a moment you don't really care. You made something happen. That feeling is easy to overlook once you become more experienced. When you know your way around a synthesizer, you can often hear a sound in your head and know roughly which oscillator, filter, envelope or effect is going to get you there. That's incredibly useful, but there is something special about those early days when almost every discovery feels like opening a door. You don't know exactly where the door leads. You just want to see what's behind it.


THE FUN OF NOT KNOWING


Electronic music has an unusually generous relationship with experimentation. A synthesizer doesn't ask you to understand synthesis before you are allowed to make a sound, and your DAW doesn't care whether you know what an oscillator is. You can simply start pressing buttons and see what happens.

Of course, sooner or later you start wanting to understand what you're hearing. Maybe you discover that the strange sound you just made has something to do with resonance. Perhaps someone explains why changing the attack of an envelope suddenly makes your synth feel more percussive. You might spend an evening learning what an LFO actually does, only to realise that you have been accidentally using one for months. That is one of the nicest things about learning to make electronic music: knowledge often arrives because you are curious about something you have already experienced. A technical concept stops being an abstract term and suddenly becomes something you can hear. You turn a knob because you want to know what happens. Then you hear what happens. Then you want to know why. And before you realise it, you've learned something.


THE HAPPY ACCIDENT


Electronic music is full of happy accidents. You might load the wrong preset and discover a sound that is far more interesting than the one you were looking for. Perhaps you move a note to the wrong place in a sequence and suddenly the rhythm starts to groove. You put an effect on a channel just to hear what it does and accidentally create something that becomes the most interesting part of your track. Sometimes you make a sound that you absolutely love and then discover that you have no idea how you made it. You try to recreate it.

Nothing. You go back through the synth. You check the oscillator settings. You move the filter. You look at the effects. Eventually you give up, save the patch and decide that whatever happened, happened. There is something wonderfully frustrating about that. Because even though you can't reproduce the sound, you have learned that the sound is possible. And now you want to know how to get there again.


YOUR FIRST TRACK DOESN'T HAVE TO BE GOOD


One of the strange things about learning to make music today is that you are surrounded by finished work from people who have spent years developing their craft. You can listen to an incredible record on your headphones, watch a producer perform at a festival and then open your own project five minutes later wondering why your kick sounds like a cardboard box. The comparison is completely unfair. You are comparing your beginning with somebody else's accumulated experience.

Research into musical development supports the importance of practice and experience in developing musical skill. A 2014 meta-analysis of 13 studies found a substantial relationship between task-relevant practice and musical achievement, while later research has emphasised that practice is only one part of the much more complicated process behind expertise. But there is another side to this that statistics can't really capture: making music is supposed to be fun.

Your first track doesn't have to prove anything. Maybe it has an enormous kick and a bassline that is somehow completely out of tune. Maybe the arrangement falls apart after 32 bars. Maybe you spend two hours making a hi-hat pattern that nobody else will ever hear. You might even finish the track and realise that it is objectively terrible. And still have had a brilliant evening making it.

That matters.


LEARNING THROUGH PLAY


There is a tendency to think that learning something properly means sitting down and studying it before you are allowed to have fun with it. Electronic music doesn't have to work that way. You can learn about synthesis while trying to make a ridiculous bass sound. You can learn about mixing because you want your kick to hit harder. You can discover what compression does because you put it on a drum loop and suddenly something feels different.The technical explanation can come later.

In fact, sometimes it is much more interesting when it does. Imagine someone telling you that an oscillator produces a periodic waveform. Useful information, certainly. But hearing a saw wave change into a square wave while you are actually making a track gives that information a completely different meaning. You aren't learning because someone told you that you should. You're learning because you want to make the sound do something.



COPYING ISN'T CHEATING


Most makers borrow before they develop their own voice. You hear a bassline you love and want to understand how it works. You try to recreate the kick from a track that has been stuck in your head. You follow a tutorial to build a particular synth patch. You download a preset because it sounds fantastic and then start changing it just to see what happens. There is nothing wrong with that.

It is one of the ways we learn what we like.Eventually, the question starts to change. At first you might ask, "How did they make this?" Later, it becomes, "How would I make this?" And somewhere along the way, you start wondering what would happen if you ignored the original idea altogether.

That is when experimentation becomes particularly exciting. You are no longer just trying to reproduce something you heard. You are using what you have learned as a starting point for something that didn't exist before.


EXPERTISE MAKES THE PLAYGROUND BIGGER


Celebrating experimentation doesn't mean that expertise doesn't matter. It does. The more you understand about synthesis, rhythm, arrangement, acoustics, mixing and production, the more deliberately you can shape the ideas in your head. Knowledge gives you more choices, and it makes it easier to solve problems when something doesn't sound the way you imagined. But expertise doesn't have to be the entry ticket. You can be fascinated by a synthesizer before you understand synthesis. You can make techno before you understand every aspect of mixing. You can write a track before you know exactly why one arrangement works and another doesn't. The knowledge can grow alongside the music. And that is perhaps a much more enjoyable way to learn than waiting until you feel qualified to begin.


THERE IS NO SINGLE WAY TO MAKE MUSIC


Some people want to release records. Others have no interest in releasing anything. Some want to play clubs, while others are perfectly happy making music at home after work. Some people build elaborate hardware studios; others make everything on a laptop and a pair of headphones. Some finish tracks every week. Others spend six months on one idea. Some are obsessed with technical detail. Others simply turn knobs until something makes them smile. None of these approaches is more legitimate than the others. The common thread is much simpler: they enjoy making things.

And perhaps that is what makes the community around electronic music so interesting. There are people at completely different stages of the journey, all discovering different things and all finding their own reasons to keep coming back. One person might be learning how to program their first kick while another is building a modular system they have spent years refining. They have very different levels of experience, but they can still recognise the same feeling when a sound suddenly works.

That little moment when you stop and think:

"Oh, that's nice."


THE JOY IS IN THE DISCOVERY


There is a reason people can spend an entire evening making music without noticing the time. It isn't always because they are working towards something. Sometimes they are simply curious about what happens if they turn the cutoff a little further, put another oscillator underneath the first one, move a note half a step or run a sequence through an effect they have never used before.

Most of those experiments won't become finished music. They don't need to. The process itself can be rewarding. There is something deeply satisfying about hearing an idea gradually take shape. A rhythm starts to move. A bassline finally sits underneath the kick. A synth patch suddenly has exactly the character you were looking for. You play the loop again, perhaps for the twentieth time, and it still makes you smile. Those moments are small. They are also the reason we keep doing it.


EVERYONE STARTS SOMEWHERE


The producer whose music you admire had a first track. The artist whose studio you watch online once had to figure out what all those unfamiliar controls were doing. The person who can now build an entire arrangement without thinking about it once had to work out how to make four bars loop properly. There is no universal starting point, and there is no deadline for becoming "good".

You might be making your first track. You might have been producing for ten years. You might still be trying to figure out what kind of maker you actually want to be. Wherever you are, there is always something else to discover.

And maybe that is the real joy of making electronic music. There is always another sound to find, another technique to understand, another happy accident to chase and another idea that might turn into something you never expected. You sit down with a blank project and a few tools. You start experimenting. You learn something, break something, fix something, laugh at something that sounds absolutely ridiculous and eventually stumble across a sound that makes you stop what you're doing.

For a moment, you don't need to know whether it is good enough, professional enough or even useful.

You made it.


Everyone starts somewhere. The joy is finding out where you can go from there.
